Blue Island Mattress

Catalog Design and Photography

As Blue Island Mattress expands from Rockford to Chicago, they’re introducing exciting new products and establishing their presence in the Windy City. I created a sleek 14-page product catalog that highlights their offerings with clean design and vibrant photography capturing the essence of their quality. In addition, I designed a concise handout pamphlet to complement the catalog. These materials are tailored to elevate client interactions and help solidify Blue Island’s growing reputation in Chicago’s competitive mattress market.

Objectives and Challenges

The project had two core deliverables: a one-page handout that would serve as a quick reference guide for walk-in customers, and a more detailed fourteen-page booklet designed to break down every mattress they offered. Both pieces had to feel aligned while serving different functions. The handout needed to be instantly readable—clean, minimal, and clutter-free—while the booklet required more structure, product detail, and visual explanation without overwhelming the reader.

In addition to design, I was also responsible for photographing all fourteen of their mattresses. This meant planning two full days of shooting, setting up consistent lighting across a relatively tight space, and making sure each mattress looked clean, high-quality, and true to scale. The shooting schedule had to align with store hours and staff availability, which added logistical pressure to the creative execution.

My Process

I started by reviewing their existing brand elements and creating a simple identity system using typography, layout standards, and color. The photography focused on clarity and consistency, showing each product in its true form. I wrote all the catalog text, structured the page layouts, and collaborated with the team to refine every detail through multiple rounds of revisions. The entire project was handled solo, but in close communication with staff across sales and operations.

Results

The final designs are now in use across the Blue Island sales floor and serve as core tools for guiding customers through their mattress options. The client now has a reusable and expandable visual system, along with marketing materials that feel consistent and professionally crafted. This project not only improved their print presence but also helped unify how the business presents itself across all customer touchpoints.
